| Hello Newsletter Tester, Firstly I would like to thank Tracey and Em from Dive Adventures who came out last week to show us our beautiful diving destinations for our travel in 2011 last Thursday. Another thank-you to the people who came and braved another freezing Melbourne night out of thier warm beds to come and listen. The general consensus was that the trips will be magnificent but we all wanted to leave this week and escape the Melbourne winter. Apart from the overseas trips we have also booked some interstaters like the Yongala and Fish Rock Cave. There are only 5 spots left on the Yongala livaboard trip so this is one that if you wanted to come on be quick. Dives have been going out as usual which is great. All of our divers on Sunday were ecstatic with the excellent conditions the bay put on with water like glass and great visibility. We are about to introduce another monthly event to our dive calendar called 'Dive with a DM' (thanks James for the idea) These days will be a chance for all divers to go out with with one of our DM's or Instructors and go through any skills that need fine-tuning and a chance to ask what you believe to be the silliest of questions about your equipment, diving and your dive skills. We are always here to ask these questions anyway. As I always say no question is a silly question. If you want to ask it I bet there will be another 5 people thinking the same thing. I am sure that these days will be a great day out and a huge success. We have heaps of other plans for the rest of the year so stay tuned for more exciting events. Below is just a snippit of what will be going on around here so read on. Kat | ||||||||||

News from Jimmy:-Well winter is upon us and the conditions have been, well - Variable... It would seem that weekends are either fantastic, or how do i put it - challenging? That said, midweek has been fantastic. I was lucky enough to get on the Canberra last Wednesday afternoon with a visitor from NZ (those Kiwis love their diving) and we had great conditions. Mill pond flat heading through the heads, very little surge on the wreck and great Visibility. So if you are lucky enough to score a day off midweek, don't forget that there is always something going on below the surface. And less numbers, more room - perfect for hermits like me to break up the usual schedule of eating fish and chips and making pipe bombs - oh. On this - I have been a bit slack of late with the Wednesday night dives (sorry Darren), but am rearing to get going again, so if you want a dive on Wednesday evening you will no doubt find me under one of our lovely piers - tag along, and grab a cheeky brew afterward. Meet at the Rye shop at 5 or gimme a bell during the day and we can arrange a time and place. We also have Twitter now - so if you want to know what the conditions are looking like before jumping in the car for the drive to the peninsula, follow us: @AOSRye, I update the conditions and random goings on everyday (and when i forget DM Mel is right onto it). Read below for some changes to AOS Rye. We will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Mainly to give us time to do all the little things around the shop that aren't possible with the door open. You can always call Glen Iris, or in a super air emergency my mobile and we can help you out. That and getting the odd sleep in will make little Jimmy a much more pleasant and not so snappy guy to be around, "Shut Up Jimmy" "What" "You wanna go" - wow tangent. If you haven't popped in of late - you may be surprised to see the huge TV on the wall - With Xbox. Oh yeah... So if you feel like a bit of a rock guide and think you can take the king - Guitar Hero championships are only a visit away. With that, I am off to enjoy my day off - and practice some guitar hero to be ready for your next visit. (Scott Edwards - I'm coming for you, you may rule at Table Tennis, but console gaming is my domain) Cheers - Jimmy (and the Dirty 3 Original P.O.R - you want that bottom rocker son?)
Some changes at Rye:-This is just a quick one to let you know that Rye will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays until Summer. If you need anything from Rye on those days give us a call at Glen Iris on 9813 8722 or leave a message and Jimmy will get back to you on Wednesday. This will give us a chance to get Jimmy in at Glen Iris and plan what is going to be a monster Summer. We will let you know when we will be reopening on these days in future issues.Club nights at Rye will be different too. Closing at 6pm on Fridays will allow you all to get an early night and some beauty sleep and get raring to go for our weekly club nights at Rye on Saturdays. Starting this week from 4pm every Saturday we will be having a BBQ. Bring your mates, family, pets and randoms to the shop for a feed and some social drinks with friends. This will be a great chance for everyone to chat about their dives for the weekend and give Jimmy and everyone interested a chance to do a scallop dive and feast on the fantastic seafood we have right on our doorstep. We believe that this is a better day to hold our weekly events in Rye.

But even weapons have their weakness, and when Cobb loses everything, he's forced to embark on one final mission in a desperate quest for redemption. Digital Photo Info Night Thursday the 12th August @ Glen Iris from 7pm
It's that time of the year again when people have arrived back from their sunny dive holidays, memory cards jam packed full of photos and a puzzled look that spells out 'whats next?'.Well my friends, those photos won't colour correct, edit, touch up, flip, flop, effect, saturate or crop themselves! I've been taking photos underwater for over 3 years now and I still don't think I've ever taken a photo that didn't require a little bit of TLC to get it up to viewing standard. Often I am asked advice on how to fix this photo or that photo, what software should I use?, which step should I do first?... Well, August 12th is your chance to not only ask the questions, but bring in your laptop/camera/memory cards/photos on a disc and sit down as a group and work through touching up the best of your shots and getting them ready for a " 'Your Name Here' Greatest Hits" album on Facebook. So, here's why you should attend: 1. Get your photos out of your camera and into the world 2. Stop your relatives complaining about having to trawl through 100's of blue/green photos 3. Up your knowledge on photo touch up techniques 4. What else are you going to do on a Thursday night? Things you need to bring: 1. Laptop/computer 2. Photos (memory card/CD/hard drive) 3. Software (PC: Lightroom, Mac: Aperture, Free software: Picasa 3.0 (download it of google) ) Even if you don't have a camera feel free to bring your photos along for some pointers and advice :-) Cheers, Matt Krumins A perfect time to use all these skills is on the Digital Photography Course. Instructor: Matt Krumins Date: 10th and 11th of August Structure: 10th theory and a Late Afternoon Dive at Rye Pier 11th Early Morning Dive at Flinders Pier (TBC) Cost: $ 295 Book on the Info Night and only pay $ 250

Someone sent me something interesting:-New marine species found at 1400m.Prehistoric six-gilled sharks, giant oil fish, swarms of crustaceans and many new species have been found in deep water off the far north Queensland coast. Scientists from the Queensland Brain Institute have used high-tech equipment to film 1400m below sea level at Osprey Reef, 350km northeast of Cairns. The research team, led by Professor Justin Marshall, captured the sea creatures using special remote controlled cameras, which sat on the sea floor. "Osprey Reef is one of the many reefs in the Coral Sea Conservation Zone, which has been identified as an area of high conservation importance by the federal government," Prof Marshall said. "Therefore, it is paramount that we identify the ecosystems and species inhabiting the area. "As well as understanding life at the surface, we need to plunge off the walls of Osprey to describe the deep-sea life that lives down to 2000m, beyond the reach of sunlight. "We simply do not know what life is down there and our cameras can now record the behavior and life in Australia's largest biosphere - the deep sea." The research could lead to many new scientific discoveries, researchers believe. Prof Marshall said most of our knowledge on how nerve cells function and communicate was pioneered through work on squid giant nerve cells. "We are now returning to these original model systems, both for their own intrinsic interest and also to better understand brain disorders which lead to conditions such as epilepsy," he said. Research student Andy Dunstan said in a statement from the University of Queensland that learning more about the creatures' primitive eyes and brain could help neuroscientists better understand human vision. In September the scientists will travel to the Peruvian Trench off South America where they will film and capture deep-sea species 2000m below sea level.
