Scuba Diving in South Africa
The water conditions in South Africa vary. Generally, you will dive from semi-rigid ribs, which are launched either from beaches or via river mouths. Launches can be bumpy, as you will break through the incoming waves. All divers must hold at minimum an Advanced Open Water certification, so that they are comfortable and confident diving on this trip.
Aliwal Shoal is a world-famous scuba diving site, formed from fossilized sand dunes thousands of years ago, when sea levels were lower than present day. Here you can find a huge diversity of tropical sea life, as the warm Aghulas Current runs south along the east coast of Africa. If you love sharks, you will love Aliwal Shoal. One of the most popular dive sites here is Raggies Cave, so named as it is the best place to see Ragged Tooth Sharks. The ‘Raggies’ rest in the shoal during their annual migration between July – November. The shoal is also home to over 1200 species of fish, as well as turtles, rays, mantas, angelfish, butterfly fish and dolphins. Other sharks, such as Great White Sharks, Tiger Sharks, White Tips and Whale Sharks may also be seen here.
Looking for the world’s best shark dive? Look no further than Protea Banks! This breathtaking experience has been rated by many divers as the best shark dive in the world. South Africa is one of three places in the world offering baited shark dives, and at Protea Banks you dive in open water, hanging in the blue, whilst possible Tiger, Bull, Hammerhead and Oceanic Black-Tip sharks come in to investigate the scent trail around you. Of course, a comprehensive safety briefing and training session is included. Moreover, from October to May, Scalloped Hammerhead Sharks are also seen shoaling in their hundreds. This is one of the best chances to see the world’s largest marine predators.
